Tipping Etiquette and Standards
Tipping customs vary dramatically by country, service type, and cultural norms. In the United States, tipping is effectively mandatory in service industries where workers earn below minimum wage.
Standard Tipping Rates by Service
- Restaurants (Sit-down): 18-20% for standard service, 15% for poor service, 25%+ for exceptional service
- Food Delivery: 15-20%, minimum $3-5 regardless of order size
- Bartenders: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of tab
- Hair Stylists: 15-20% of service cost
- Taxi/Rideshare: 15-20%, rounded to nearest dollar
- Hotel Housekeeping: $3-5 per night, left daily with a note
Bill Splitting Strategies
- Even Split: Simplest for groups with similar spending. Everyone pays equal shares including tip.
- Itemized Split: Each person pays for their orders plus proportional tax and tip.
- App-Based Splitting: Venmo, Splitwise, and similar apps automate calculations.
International Tipping: In Japan and South Korea, tipping is considered rude. In most European countries, service is included in the bill. Research local customs before traveling.
Automatic Gratuity: Many restaurants add 18-20% automatically for parties of 6-8+. This is not optional. Additional tipping beyond the auto-gratuity is appreciated but not expected.
