Percentages represent parts per hundred, derived from the Latin "per centum" meaning "by the hundred." They provide a universal language for comparing proportions in finance, science, education, and daily life.

Types of Percentage Calculations

1. Finding What Percentage X is of Y

Formula: (Part ÷ Whole) × 100. Example: 45 out of 60 on a test = 75%.

2. Finding X% of a Value

Formula: (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total. Example: 20% tip on $85 = $17.

3. Percentage Change

Formula: ((New - Old) ÷ Old) × 100. Example: Stock rising from $50 to $65 = 30% increase.

Percentage Point vs. Percent: A change from 5% to 8% is a 3 percentage point increase, but a 60% relative increase. News headlines often confuse these.

Real-World Applications

Shopping: A "30% off" sale on $120 saves you $36, bringing price to $84.
Finance: Credit card APR of 24.99% means carrying $1,000 costs ~$249.90 annually.
